The New Loco Depot at Parkes

An afternoon view of the Parkes loco depot from the coal stage c1948

In this afternoon view we can see the ashpits with the skips used to lift the ash from the pits and dump it into the open wagons. Ash was taken out onto the branch lines and used as ballast. In the road nearest the coal stage are travelling water tanks ("water gins"). The round house is towards the left of the photograph and several locomotives can be seen around the bull ring in the right middle distance.

A close up view of the skip and gantry structure used to lift ash from the pit (just visible in the foreground) and dump it into the open wagons. Each of the gantries had a small shed behind it, presumably to house a winder.

A view of the roundhouse and chargeman's office at Parkes Loco. From the lack of activity it is possible that this photo dates from just before the opening of the depot. c 1943?
