P924 outside Condobolin Station, 1919

Train crew and station staff pose on P924, with Lo33 tender, at Condobolin, 1919

P924 was the first of three P class locomotives modified to draw water from a traveling tank
while running tender first. This modification was necessary for a period during construction of the
line to Broken Hill. When the (temporary) end of the line was at Trida terminus, the nearest
turning facilities were at Roto and the train had to run tender first over the Trida - Roto
section. To facilitate the tender-first running, the trains operated with a tender modified to
give better visibility. Although allotted to Parkes, the modified locos (P800 and P917 were the
other two) only returned to Parkes for servicing. There was only one attached to Condobolin
services at any time. As well as the Trida service, these locos also ran the Mount Hope trains.
